In defence, the tree produces a dark, fragrant resin, and it is this resin soaked heartwood, known as agarwood, that carries the scent we call oud.
Because only a small share of wild trees ever become infected, and because the resin can take years to develop, genuine oud is rare. That rarity is a large part of why it has been treasured for centuries and why it is sometimes called liquid gold. Today much oud is produced from sustainably cultivated Aquilaria, which protects wild populations while keeping this remarkable material available.
